Singapore Zoo – Frozen Tundra
Project Information
Oceanis’ innovative design for the penguin exhibits for the Frozen Tundra incorporated a penguin slide and wave surge to create a stimulating environment for the animals and exciting viewing for guests. Oceanis also included fun pop up views so visitors could get up close with the animals, whilst they remained undisturbed in their natural environment.
After the death of Singapore Zoo’s beloved, but aged polar bear, Inuka, the Zoo wished to create a new world-class home for a mixed species coastal habitat showcasing sea lions, harbour seals, pelicans, cormorants and African penguins – the Frozen Tundra.
The Zoo’s criteria for the new facilities were that the exhibit should be stimulating, interactive and beautiful, to create an environment that would immerse visitors and be a memorable new experience.
Oceanis designed all pools, streams, acrylic viewing panels, aqua-scaping, profiling, waterproofing, artificial exhibitry, and extensive life support systems for the five separate pools that would make up the Frozen Tundra experience.
The systems included wave and current generators to create habitat enrichment for the animals and to achieve the immersive experience sought by the Zoo for visitor engagement.
Innovative design features such as a penguin slide, wave surge and pop up views were incorporated, allowing visitors to get up close with the animals, whilst the animals remained undisturbed in their natural environment.
High dive and beach access were also designed into the new exhibit to create interactive zones for keepers with animals within the main pool areas.
Oceanis also designed artificial sea grasses and kelp into the main pool to highlight currents and water movement, with a beach entry shaped for wave action.
Oceanis has designed intricate detail into each exhibit, all designed to create immersive, exciting experiences for visitors that also allow high levels of animal care.
