Craigie Leisure Centre — Aquatics Consulting, Design and Management Water Treatment Plant

Project Information

“The control systems renovation project is one of the best projects ever done for the City.”

Josh Wixon, Coordinator of Leisure Centres for the City of Joondalup

Oceanis initially conducted the design and provided oversight of the replacement of water treatment facilities for a 25 metre pool, large leisure pool, with appended shallow water multi-function space for aerobics and learn-to-swim programs, a large children’s aquatics play area, spa and sauna/steam rooms.

During the initial planning stages there were cost pressures on the project that required re-thinking of some basic architectural planning assumptions, with consequent impact on the water treatment plant design.  A lateral approach to use of structures, plant rooms and tanks was implemented to save considerable cost.

Oceanis also assisted the City to rectify the chlorine gas systems design and put in place safety measures to overcome serious gas discharge issues resulting from contractor work.

Oceanis later designed new water chemistry facilities, new electrical systems, switchboards and control systems and managed their procurement, construction and installation.  In particular the new controls systems provide new variable speed drives, PLC’s and control strategies to improve performance and decrease operations labour requirements.

Oceanis then developed a plan for the renovation and upgrade of the waterplay area and assisted the City with procurement.

Oceanis also redesigned the site’s heating systems and provided project management and superintendency services for project which includes new hybrid geothermal and heat pumps systems — reflecting the latest advances in aquatic facility heating technology — which provides high efficiency energy extraction processes.

Oceanis continues to assist the City of Joondalup with a variety of operations strategies to contribute to Craigie Leisure Centre being one of the best financially performing council aquatic centres in Western Australia.
