The Growing Value of Australia’s Marine Economy: Insights from the AIMS Index 2025

Every two years, the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) publishes its Index of Marine Industry, providing a detailed picture of how marine-related industries contribute to Australia’s economy.

The figures highlight both the scale and their importance :

  • $229 billion in economic outputs generated in 2023
  • $203 billion in total value added, representing 9.1% of Australia’s GDP
  • 712,000 full-time equivalent jobs supported nationwide
  • A 24% increase in value added since 2021

The Index also highlights the rapid growth of tourism, the continued expansion of the oil and gas sector, and the need for science-based strategies to ensure sustainable development.

Why This Matters for Design and Infrastructure

For Oceanis, the findings resonate with the work that we do.

From marine research laboratories such as at AIMS and James Cook University, to aquatics tourism and leisure facilities around the world we are proud that our water based projects contribute to the important blue economy, both in Australia and internationally.
