Claremont, Western Australia

At the heart of Claremont is the Methodist Ladies College and Christ Church Grammar School Aquatic Precinct, which showcases Oceanis’ innovative energy-efficient initiatives.

This project features a brand-new 40 by 25-meter pool, designed for both lap training and as a FINA standard water polo facility. This new addition seamlessly integrates with Christ Church Grammar’s existing 50-meter pool, forming a unified aquatic centre that serves the entire school community.

Innovative Energy Solutions

Oceanis International took on the challenge of creating an energy-efficient solution for this aquatic precinct. Our team engineered a smart geothermal pool design, reconfiguring the geothermal heating system to heat both pools efficiently.

Oceanis designed an innovative hybrid geothermal heating system using latent energy from the existing CCGS geothermal water system.
Remarkably, this innovative approach resulted in only a 20% increase in energy draw compared to the previous consumption of a single pool.

An innovative balance tank design was cleverly incorporated around the pool structure at no extra construction cost, providing thermal energy and rainwater storage, which has contributed to the reduced peak heating and electrical loads, reduced water use, stabilized water chemistry, and overall significantly reduced operations costs, an important outcome for the school.

Proven Performance

These combined initiatives have resulted in a halving of net unit energy reduction of 60% across the precinct.

The geothermal pool design and operational strategies developed by Oceanis have made this facility one of the most energy-efficient heated aquatic centres in Australia.

Our Approach

Oceanis led a collaborative process in which the needs of both schools were negotiated.

The final project is a careful balance of educational needs, capital costs, technical design excellence, energy and maintenance efficiency, and negotiated shared infrastructure.

The new MLC pool, now combined with the Christchurch Grammar School pool to create a world-class aquatics precinct, continues to receive accolades for its operational efficiency and aesthetic appeal and is shaping the way both schools approach aquatic sports for the benefit of their respective school communities.

Oceanis is proud to have played a pivotal role in creating a sustainable and environmentally-friendly aquatic facility for the Methodist Ladies College and Christ Church Grammar School communities.

Our dedication to developing aquatic design and engineering solutions ensures that these initiatives will continue to benefit many more communities in the future.
